Pivot Drills – The Down Swing & Lower Body Leverage

The most complicated part of a simple golf swing motion would likely be the transition into the down swing, and I would hazard this guess because of our inclination to “hit” from the top of the back pivot.

One of the things that really excited me about the pivot drills I’ve implemented for the upcoming video “MCS – The Power Of The Pivot” was that I believe I’ve found a simple explanation and demonstration of this transition.

It’s not even a separate and new part of the drill sequence – I begin with the stance and why one should have this stance, including the foot positions, and then I demonstrate what happens to make people slide laterally when you don’t want to do that.

By showing the proper setup and demonstrating how one can go from sliding laterally (not good) to creating supports with the legs and hips (essential), you will already know how to move the lower body to begin the down swing transition!

If that’s not exciting, well, I don’t know what else to say, because most of my time working with people on their swings has been on how to use the lower body for leverage on the transition.

Once you have learned and adopted this practice, you will actually be creating more efficient leverage then most of today’s Modern Golf Swing pros who have to go to the gym to build muscle to power their swings.

You won’t need that.  The body’s construction is enough, as demonstrated by a judo throw:

This reverse diagonal angle is a great vantage point from which to watch that leverage taking place.

First, observe the full swing in slow motion:

Now, I would direct your attention to the transitional part of the down swing from the top, and you’ll be able to see what I’m doing myself with the lower body.

You will see that I’m making no effort whatsoever to power the down swing with my arms and hands – they are passive in the first phase, and all I’m doing is leveraging the arms and club down with the weight transfer.

Watch the hips and legs:

… and then see how the arms and clubs are dropping without an effort to release the club – the only thing I do in the first half of the down swing to the bottom is transferring weight.

By the time I’ve done so, the arms and club have dropped, nearly to the halfway down mark.

I’ve done nothing with the arms or hands to do this, as it’s all in the hips and legs and the weight transfer.

You will see how easy it is when you follow the progressive drills.

The video should be completed in the next week and a half, give or take a couple of days more or less, by the work already completed.

More to come.

I can see what you’re getting onto! sidenote: I’ve found shadowboxing and skipping (have always done skipping and found it is similar to the golf swing in that it requires rhythm and tempo, and your momentum makes the rope swing without forcing it), and shadowboxing really does help with pivoting in golf
