I’m Convinced – A Proper Setup & Pivot = Human Iron Byron

I’m finally getting through the video and preparing for the final edit after having had to re-shoot the pivot exercises due to my dissatisfaction with the original video footage.

One of the things I was able to add with the re-shoot is the adjustable nature of the setup itself – I have talked about a standard, high-heel pivot and my last video featured the low-heel-lift that Ben Hogan featured in the 1950s, and it’s all the same pivot action with a variation in the setup.

One things that get clearer to me every time I’m working on this video and revisiting the pivot exercises – if you nail the setup and pivot action, you really do become a human Iron Byron, so to speak.

It’s just a matter of getting into that setup with everything in the proper place (including the ball position), and then making the back pivot and the down swing through the bottom to the finish.

No lateral motion, no twisting, no heaving and jumping to generate leverage – just using the positioning and weight transfer to do all of the work.

I had this basically nailed as far back as 2015, but it took years of additional research to explore every avenue that came to mind on how to improve or perfect the motion.

This swing below is not perfect because of the grip, but if you just imagine the action of the Iron Byron and focus on my head, you can see how the positioning and pivoting action create a swing action that gave me over 180 mph ball speed in my mid-40s without any gym work or strengthening exercises – just hitting balls a few times per week.

I don’t have anything much to say right now because I’m focused on the video-making.  I am aiming to have it completed by the weekend, with apologies again for the delay – but rest assured that it’s getting to the end, bit by bit.

I’ll leave you all now with one of my favorite memories of some of the opportunities that my golf swing research has afforded me – hitting balls at the members’ driving range at Medinah CC in the Chicago area, back in 2019, and the site of this year’s Presidents Cup competition.

My host had a whole rack of Callaway drivers along with his set of metal-woods and irons, and he wanted to see me hit some of them – he was especially tickled when I put a drive or more over the trees at the end of the range.

My lateral stability with the head on the transition left a little to be desired, but the pivot action is the same as in 2015 and is what it would be today – I’ve just perfected my own positioning and grip and stopped swinging left-dominant as I was back then.

Some of you may know that even the pros don’t get to use the members’ range – my host when I was at Medinah to consult with him on the golf swing told me that there is always a makeshift range set up for professional events so that the members’ range doesn’t get all chewed up by all of the pros – it may be different for the Presidents Cup this time around, but I did get to hit balls at the actual members’ range when I was there.

I will update the video progress as it goes – more to come!
