I have said for years that there were two different mechanically-correct pivot actions – the traditional Classic Golf Swing with the rotary hip turn and lifting leading heel, and the second, what I am now calling the “Shift & Post” based upon having called it that when talking about Mike Dunaway.
Now that I have isolated and can replicate and explain the “Shift & Post” pivot action, I am wondering where we go from here.
Granted the Shift & Post is a more advanced pivot action, I am tempted to just deal with both pivot actions on the blog – I have said that there can only be one optimal swing motion, which I believe to be a swing motion properly implementing the Shift & Post principles, but if the traditional Classic action is easier to learn, throwing that aside wouldn’t be optimal for the average person just looking for a mechanically-correct golf swing.
Classic Golf Swing
Just as I say Jack Nicklaus was closest to optimal – that would be for the Classic Golf Swing, because he didn’t ever swing with a Shift & Post action.
Shift & Post
Mike Dunaway would have to be closest to optimal for the Shift & Post, the only objection to his model that I have being his centered setup with a shift to the right on the back pivot – athletic intuition and most motion theories tells you that a moving head is an issue, especially when dealing with performing an athletic motion that requires precision and accuracy.
Other than that, you can’t find what you might call a flaw in Dunaway’s swing model. In fact, his earliest swing model was nearly perfect because he had very little if any head shift:
But Still A Shift
So, I have fulfilled my personal swing mission in finding the optimal swing models for not one but both mechanically-correct pivot actions, and I will certainly be swinging Shift & Post going forward, but I am thinking of the person who comes to this blog in search of just a way to swing with mechanical correctness and maximize their ball-striking (distance, accuracy, consistency) while reducing the risk of injury.
If I drop the Classic Golf Swing and only discuss the Shift & Post, would I be taking something away from those seeking a simple way to swing soundly?
Or would it just clog things up talking about both things?
I’ll be doing some thinking about this in the coming weeks.
As I said, I’ve found what I’ve been seeking all of these years.
But this blog is and has always been more for others to share the journey and learn a golf swing than for myself, so…
