The Power Of The Pivot – What The Progressive Drills Will Do For You

I’ve been working on the progressive pivot exercises that are designed to teach the mechanically-correct pivot action, but I’ve been fiddling with them for the past weeks to try to get all of the concepts I feel are crucial for an optimal golf swing.

I have actually laughed out loud at times while doing them, because I keep thinking about Tai-Chi when I start doing the down swing pivot exercises.

That’s because there are no tools or implements in these drills – for the first time, I am not even using a club or swing stick across the shoulders – it’s all body motion.

Right now, I’ve got the drills narrowed down to just a few, to show the process of taking one’s stance with the club, and to show how the address is spring-loaded to begin the back pivot so naturally, you don’t have to think about it.

So, these exercises will teach:

  • How to achieve the simple “Leaning A” position and how the body naturally conforms to this position,
  • How to take the grip on the club with both hands,
  • The first move of the back swing is just a reversal of the “Leaning A” stance move,
  • The back swing angle that the hands and club will take with no manipulation required,
  • How the back swing uses the No-Turn Pivot concept (I like to call it “under, not around”),
  • The transition to the down swing using the hip slide towards the target,
  • How a stable head during all of these moves ensures the proper back pivot and down swing

The concepts also show:

  • The nature of the pivot using no lateral motion (swinging “in the box”),
  • The vertical principle of the golf swing, using gravity and leverage to generate power,
  • The natural arc of the swing, proving that no turn towards the target is necessary,
  • How the hands move down, out and then back in, all while staying balanced and finally
  • How the ball position ensures optimal impact conditions, whichever club you’re using.

This video has been delayed because I really wanted to see if I could make some new swing footage but unfortunately, the Frozen Shoulder condition, while vastly improved, has flared up as I’ve read can happen.

So, even while I’m on the mend, it doesn’t feel as good as it did a couple of months ago and I’ve decided that I can’t wait any longer and to just get the video project completed.

The drill exercises can be done virtually anywhere that you have a little more space than you would in a telephone booth – there is no club, no prop or swing aid involved, so it’s just you and your body, as I demonstrated over ten years ago with this rudimentary move with the trailing arm:

Swinging Motion Without A Club

I should have a release date to give within the next week or so, depending on how much time I can put aside to produce and edit the material.

There likely won’t be much posting until I’ve completed the project, as I would rather put my posting time into the video project – it’s still summer, and I’ve got kids home from school and the past month alone has been taken up with the FIFA World Cup tournament, which my son and I have been watching, among other family things that come up.

More to come!

I’ve got you, AK – the furniture and ceiling will be safe, unlike all of the years past where I literally vandalized my home doing swing drills! 🙂
