Originally posted October 31st 2025 – I am re-publishing this updated post on the podcast interview I did last Halloween last year and which should be airing sometime in July on the Golf Smarter podcast, which Josh Karp has taken over over following Fred Greene’s retirement. /update
I was contacted by journalist, writer and producer Josh Karp last year and he inquired if I’d like to participate in a golf podcast to discuss World Golf Hall of Famer Tom Weiskopf.
Josh is a writer who has written several books, one about golf called “Straight Down The Middle.”
He’s had commercial success – his first book, “A Futile and Stupid Gesture,” was turned into a Netflix movie in 2018, and his third book, “Orson Welles’s Last Movie,” became the basis for Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville’s documentary “They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead,” which he also coincidentally co-produced.
He’s currently working on a golf podcast series about the greatest golf swings in history (Tom Weiskopf’s was definitely one) and emailed me to ask if I could join him to offer my thoughts on T.W., – of course, talking golf is something I love and I readily agreed.
Weiskopf won 16 times on the Tour, including the Open Championship in 1973 and two Canadian Opens, one of which featured a famous playoff victory over Jack Nicklaus in ’73 as well.
He designed 70 courses including Loch Lochmond (site of the Scottish Open from ’95-’10) and two course in Troon North, Scottsdale.
His swing was greatly admired and some will argue better than even Jack Nicklaus’ swing – a fellow competitor of theirs, Dave Hill, once quipped that if you had put Jack Nicklaus’ head on Tom Weiskopf’s body, the world would have had to worry.
Airing On Golf Smarter
This interview was supposed to have aired on the Golf Journal website but Josh has taken over Golf Smarter from Fred Greene who has retired and has moved the podcast interviews there.
You’ll all recall that I was on the Golf Smarter podcast back in 2019 with Fred:
We did my bit on Weiskopf last October, and I have to compliment Josh on his easy-going manner – it was like two guys discussing golf over a pint at the pub.
Josh has just informed me that our interview will hit sometime this summer in July, so I will let you all know when I know more, for those who want to catch it. You can hit Golf Smarter now to checkout other interviews, as it’s been running for years, and it is available on all of the following platforms:
I’ll make sure to announce when our interview airs!
