It’s About Controlling The Body, Not The Club

A great deal of the time I spend thinking about the golf swing hasn’t got anything to do with the mechanics – I isolated the mechanics a good while back – it has to do with how to convey the golf swing concepts involved in swinging with mechanical correctness.

I have spent a lot of time doing pivot drills in the past, along with actual swinging, and the reason I believe I’ve come up with something that will illuminate everyone’s minds with the simplicity of a proper pivot is because I don’t practice the pivot anymore.

How much time have I spent telling people to practice their pivots, and talked about how practicing the pivot daily meant, for me, the ability to pick up a club after days, weeks, even months off, and to go right back to striking the ball as well as if I’d never taken a day off?

In the past, I used a stick across the shoulders for the pivot exercise:

But how about a pivot exercise that is so effective that you don’t even have to practice it daily?

I go days now without even thinking about doing pivot exercises because the new progressive pivot drills I have been working on just work so well.

The reason?

I’ve been wondering about it for a few weeks, and it occurred to me today why that is.

The pivot exercises make you focus on controlling the body, rather than worrying about controlling the golf club.

We all know the feeling, either past or present, of getting over the ball and literally short-circuiting because of all of the swing thoughts running through our heads, especially if we’ve been taught the swing as a series of pieces one must put together like a puzzle.

Anyone who can perform the full swing drill that they watch me teach in the upcoming video should be able to swing like this below:

The body motion in this exercise proves that the swing – or a proper swing, that is – rotates from the C7 vertebra, that it is a vertical motion and not a lateral one, as well as proving that for a proper pivot to occur, one must use the hips and legs instead of trying to twist the lower back to achieve a full shoulder turn.

Even the term “shoulder turn” is misleading, as you will see, and I’ll save the term I use for it for the video itself.

In conclusion, you will be able to reset your swing if you get off track by simply performing the full swing pivot exercise – that will reset your setup if you’re getting out of position, your balance, your swing angle… I can’t think of any major swing problem that can’t be cured by just getting into your stance for and performing the drill.

More to come.

as a young guy who impresses/depresses my regular playing parteners who are over 60 by just turning up,smashing the ball and playing without stretching, straight from the car, I’m interested in this exercise you’ve discovered/invented!

AK – I predict a good deal of forehead-slapping when people watch the drills and try them.

“Is that it? This is all I have to do to swing a club?”

      I could be wrong… 🙂
