I Solved The Pivot Mystery Without Hitting A Ball!

There was no post yesterday because I was working on something that came to fruition today.

It shouldn’t be a surprise what I said in the title because, let’s face it, the pivot is about how you move the hips and legs to make a back pivot.

I solved the pivot mystery without having hit a ball since May of last year.

What mystery is there to the pivot?

The mystery of how some swingers pivot with a very high lifting leading heel like Jack Nicklaus whilst others like Ben Hogan in his later years was able to pivot with little to no lifting heel, and then Mike Dunaway pivoted with no leading heel lift whatsoever.

It all began last year with the Frozen Shoulder that made me unable to swing essentially since March, aside from one painful session in May, and I started just looking at golf swings again and pivoting without swinging, because you can practice the pivot at any time without actually swinging.

All this time, when I was trying to figure out if I could recreate Mike Dunaway’s golf swing model, but from a “Leaning A” setup, it was staring me in the face.

I got close to it yesterday, when I was making full swings with the Momentus Heavy Iron while watching the Kentucky Derby coverage.

Not the pivot – I was performing the Dunaway pivot and down swing but from a “Leaning A” position so that there was no head shift to the right on the back pivot, no problem.

This morning after waking up, I was watching a YouTube segment on the pivot from Mike Austin’s “Austinology” video with Dunaway (which I have, but it’s easier to always go to Youtube than to dig out this and that video), and when Dunaway began making pivots with the club behind his back:

… I was nodding along, “yup, looks good, very close to my pivot drill with a club or stick across the chest except for Dunaway opening the shoulders on the way back down…”

I kept thinking about it even as I was watching Premier League matches this morning and afternoon, but it the kitchen waiting for the kettle to boil for a cup of tea, I asked myself:

“why am I able to make a pivot with the heels lifting (leading heel on the back pivot, trailing heel lifting into impact) with the ‘Leaning A’ setup and also the Late Hogan/Dunaway pivots with the ‘Leading A’ setup?  What makes the difference?”

It was then, right there in the kitchen, that I realized the key to the pivot from high heel lift to none – I even gave it away without realizing the significance of what I was saying in the “Basics Of The MCS Golf Swing” video in the section on the Late Hogan pivot.

At 15:22, where I advise: “Again, you want to keep the head as stable as possible, so if you find your head moving, then you know you haven’t set yourself up exactly correctly, and you’ll have to make some adjustments.”

In the very next sentence is the key.

If you’re finding difficulty in the pivot action, just go to that section and see what adjustments you have to make – it’s right there.

Go back to the beginning of the segment and follow along with the pivot drill using the stick or club:

… and pay close heed to what I advise around 15:30.

It may seem obvious the the answer to the proper pivot isn’t just in the motion of the hips and legs but also in the setup, but there you have it.

If you have downloaded the video and you still have issues even following along, get in touch with me, by all means.

I had the answer before I figured it out, and I gave it away in the “Basics” video – because I always give what I know and I don’t hold things back, because doing so would be unethical in my view.

If you’re going to tell people how to do something, and you hold things back that you know, then I don’t know what else to call it but dastardly at the least, fraudulent at the most.

I told you all before the video was completed that the sections on the grip and the pivot alone were gold in this video, and sitting here right now, I was bang on the mark about it.

Happy Sunday all, more to come!
