Dunaway Hits Balls Left-Handed – Look At His Grip & Pivot

It’s funny that I’ve had the Mike Austin and Mike Dunaway swing videos for years, and have watched them all – the funny part is that, watching them now years later, things jump out at me that I never noticed before.

One thing about the MCS Golf Swing model theory that will never change, and can never change, is of course the “Leaning A” setup that mirrors Jack Nicklaus’ recommended setup from his “Golf My Way” book.

Other things such as the pivot action and even the grip have evolved in the MCS journey, based upon the best information and understanding I had at the time, but watching these videos back is wild.

Watching this YouTube short clip of Mike Dunaway from Mike Austin’s “Austinology” golf swing video hitting balls with his left (leading) hand only, a few things immediately jumped out at me:

  • Notice his left hand grip and remember what I talk about in “The Basics Of The MCS Golf Swing” regarding the left hand grip and why you want it this way!
  • Watch his hand action when he cocks it – again, remember what I say about the hand and wrist action and how the grip is crucial to prevent the closing of the face,
  • Observe how purely he gets down and through the swing bottom without having to manipulate the hand,
  • Look at that release through the bottom – he’s not swinging at the ball, it just gets in the way,
  • Look at Dunaway’s shoulders on the swing action and see how it matches what I say the leading shoulder does on the back pivot.

I really want to stress this to everyone who has downloaded the video if you aren’t doing this – watch the relevant sections again when working on your swing, because I made it short and succinct so that you can do this easily without wading through an hour of content.

If you’re working on your grip and you’re not quite sure you’ve got it, watch the section on the grip to reinforce why you’re gripping the club this way.

The setup – same thing. If you’re not sure you’ve got it, watch the section on the setup and make sure you’re doing it properly.

Ball position – ditto.

The pivot drill – see where this is going?

I’ve been doing this for years and years, and I still make sure of my grip and my setup when practice swinging a club or swing aid.  I don’t just grab and swing.

I make sure of my setup and stance posture when doing my pivot drills – and yes, I still do pivot drills in addition to practice swinging.  I will never stop doing the pivot drills, because other than actually hitting balls, the pivot drill is the best way to practice your swing off the driving range and golf course.

Especially when making a swing change, it is essential with something as feel-oriented as the golf swing to repeat these things as much as you can.

The greatest barrier to swing changes is the change in feel – “this doesn’t feel comfortable the way the old xyz did…” and people go back to the old way because it feels better or more comfortable.

You have to push through that and practice the things you’re changing or implementing for the first time – get it right, and repeat it until it feels second nature.

That is the key to changing your swing!

That left handed drill is so insightful. It really shows just how much set up and grip matters in the swing.
