I’ve never liked the positions and the actions in my swing as much as I do those from today, I have to tell you!
I had a hunch, I wrote a couple of weeks back, about something I had been looking at 12 years back with regards to the relationship between the back pivot and the down swing involving the concepts of “push” and “pull.”
Seems I was right on the money back then, and it took looking at Mike Dunaway’s “Peace River” video demonstration of his own back pivot concept to spur me to check it out once more.
Forget all the nonsense you hear on television, the true secret of Rory’s power is the leveraging he creates both with his semi-classic pivot (heel comes up a little, but even that little gives him more hip turn than a fully planted pivot) and his down swing from the top.
With all of my personal angst regarding finding and building an “optimal” golf swing, I would like to stress in this posting that “optimal” simply means to me, the best possible swing action you can make with regards to efficiency, speed production and accuracy/consistency.
That doesn’t mean that a swing that isn’t “optimal” is bad – when I say a swing is mechanically-sound, but not optimal, I mean that I fully endorse a swing action like that but that it could be even better.
I don’t know if I’ll be able to get a much better impact position than I did today with regards to the footwork, but while I continue to look at video, you can have a look at a drive that I absolutely slammed.
First off, I made adjustments to my action as I have been writing about, during the winter layoff, and when I got back out there, I was trying to do it all at once.
I wasn’t expecting to swing perfectly my first day hitting balls again after nearly 9 and a half months off – the last ball I struck had been at the TXG Golf facility back in late July of last summer – but I was pretty happy with what I saw after I got the video home.
It’s been a very late warm-up after the winter so the facility is still on mats until at least next week, but the weather again will be cold and wet so I likely won’t get back out until next week again anyways.
I noticed the odd time that I saw Tiger Woods driving (with driver, not a 3 wood or iron) that I was either dreaming or he had dropped off drastically in ball speed, measuring in the low 170s mph, when he’d been topping 180 mph regularly last season.
When I went to check his average club and ball speed for this current season however, I was shocked by the degree of drop-off.
I had also addressed the nature of how to leverage with the “One Exercise” drill with the Kettle Bell, and below you can see the proof of a tighter pivot when I actually swing the Kettle Bell as if making a golf swing.
I’ll leave out the parts with which I disagree (such as the “swing left” stuff and the “use the ground” of course, because everyone does, unless they’re levitating), but if you look at big driver Jon Rahm, a lot of what he’s saying goes hand-in-hand with my MCS Golf Swing philosophy or principles.
