I Made This Nicklaus-Hogan-Dunaway Gif. Nine Years Ago…

Earlier today, I posted about how I view the optimal swing to consist of the Jack Nicklaus setup with Ben Hogan’s pivot, and I mentioned Mike Dunaway as well.

I couldn’t remember exactly what I had named this gif., so I had to go searching for it month by month in my media archives, remembering that I had made it when I was producing the “MCS – Drop The Hammer” video in early 2017.

This afternoon, I was doing my shoulder rehabbing and making full practice back pivots (yes, I’m nearly back!), and it kept sticking in my head that, with the proper setup, my down swing and impact would look more like Mike Dunaway’s than either Nicklaus or Hogan.

It then dawned on me that, years ago, I had mused that the “perfect” golf swing would have Nicklaus’ setup, Hogan’s pivot and Mike Dunaway’s down swing.

Those of you who were around back then may remember this, but if you weren’t and you don’t believe me, go ahead and click on this gif. and you’ll see that it has been in my blog archives since January 2017:

Now, Mike Dunaway’s swing changed over the years, beginning with this:

… and that is what the figure in the first gif. is modeled on, in fact both swings are from the Sybervision study on his swing.

You very well could get this sliding foot release the way Hogan’s worked with this pivot:

… and I have until recently had the same foot release on my practice pivots, but it all depends on positioning and exact mechanics, because if I were to make that same compound swing gif. with the three swingers, the Dunaway down swing I am getting right now is this one:

That’s the full step-around move rather than the slide release.

So, depending on your particular setup and stance width, you may have different people performing the same back swing pivot action but they will look very different swinging because of the differences in the setups.

I said yesterday that I couldn’t wait to get out there and show WAX Nation what my swing looks like with the secret of the “Late Hogan Pivot” solved, but I have to add – I can’t wait to see for myself what my swing looks like going forward!

So I’m rehabbing, making my first full practice swings (very slow, not full speed) and waiting for swing fitness.

Then we’ll see what I’ve been talking about!

More to come.
