Golfer are now being taught that you can’t turn in a golf swing, that you have to harpoon because turning will somehow mess up what you’re doing.
Of course, if you’re swinging or being taught to swing in the Modern Golf Swing style of swinging over the leading foot, then turning is the least of your problems.
Your shoulders have to turn – they will begin to turn the moment your lead leg starts to move back to the target, and that’s simply natural leveraging using the kinetic chain.
It is an enormous straw man that they are building to knock down, because if you simply swing the way the body is designed, you won’t have to worry about the nonsense they construct to push over.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that 90% of their golf swing lessons consist of slick fast-talking the way a snake-oil salesman rattles away to keep you from thinking about what he’s saying.
Take this gent:
“It’s a Skill Set,” He Says.
Quite the harpoon action.
OK, let’s compare what he’s doing to an actual mechanically-correct transition with a drop from the top, to a tee stuck in the ground that would be my ball with this iron:
Natural Drop From The Top
That is a natural drop without harpooning the ground – tell me how you are plunking the ground like this:
“Let’s Harpoon A Walrus Today”
… if you are set up in the proper position with the club barely touching the ground to begin with?
The reason I don’t harpoon the ground in the above gif. is because my entire down swing consists of two motions – transferring my weight to the leading foot and extending my right elbow from a bent position.
That’s it.
That’s the entire down swing to impact.
Everything that follows is just allowing momentum to bring you around to the finish:
If you’re hitting the ground behind yourself on the down swing, it’s because you’re doing something wrong in your setup and back pivot.
This:
… is a solution in search of a problem. You’re going to hit the ground swinging this way because you started your swing on your leading foot, you never left your leading foot getting to the top, and you’re still on your leading foot coming down.
You have no where to go without Squatting & Dumping or Swiping & Turning.
I could go all the way back to 1998 when the model I was learning a Modern Golf Swing model:
I still got over my right side on the back pivot and then naturally leveraged the club down through impact by simply transferring my weight back to my leading foot.
Getting the weight to the trailing foot going back allows you to return to the leading foot and that simple weight transfer does all the work on the down swing:
Leave the harpooning to the northern sea hunters, they know how to do it.
If you’re going to swing a golf club, then swing the blessed club.
If you’re doing it the way we’re designed to move and leverage, then you’ll be fine.

That guy has finished me. I didn’t think these youtube swing gurus could get any worse, honestly. That was the most awkward and awful video I may have ever watched. These guys make thousands off this junk!!
“Leave the harpooning to the northern sea hunters, they know how to do it.” haahha Personally the more videos you see,the more you hear them,it’s hard not to want a Captain Ahab to drag them along for his death hunt. They are swinging for a giant white whale, not a small white ball!
You gave me a chuckle there, silly. How true.
“The reason I don’t harpoon the ground in the above gif. is because my entire down swing consists of two motions – transferring my weight to the leading foot and extending my right elbow from a bent position.” Once you have the proper set up,everything is involuntary.
George Knudson, and Mike Dunaway’s videos virtually unseen, even Tom Watson’s,but these charlatans have millions. It’s a cruel world.
