Once Again, The Hogan Meme Rears Its Head With The Instruction To “Do The Opposite”

I have said that no one out there who mythologizes Ben Hogan actually follows what he did, nor have they any clue what he was actually doing in his swing.

Here is yet another example of such, where the fellow here (again, seems a decent fellow) uses Ben Hogan’s image in his video’s thumbnail, then proceeds to get it completely opposite of what Hogan’s swing mechanics entailed.

If one is going to say, “Well, there’s more ways to do it than the way Hogan did it,” then don’t use Ben Hogan’s image to draw viewers to a train wreck that wasn’t his swing – and I’m not saying that this would be his answer, just heading off some silly assertion you’ll find in the comments.

It’s not that complicated – using Hogan’s thumbnail implies that he was doing what you’re showing people to do, and in this video, he absolutely didn’t do what is being taught.

First, the gentleman swinging never gets off his leading foot, so right off the bat, it’s a Modern Golf Swing abomination and has nothing to with Ben Hogan, who swung in the Classic Golf Swing style.

It’s the same Drop & Squat stuff you’re seeing everywhere, and it goes like this with the arms:

You see how he begins talking about the arms in the down swing, without talking about how they are supposed to be leveraged down with the rotation of the hips on the down swing transition?

And then, incredibly, he says at 0:48, “and then you’ll sort of have to try and put more body into it…” which means he’s definitely talking about swinging down from the top without using the body as the engine.

At that point, you know he has diverged completely from Hogan (if the planted leading heel on the back pivot didn’t tell you), and is now doing something completely unrelated to Hogan.

Ben Hogan tells you that himself in his clip, where he instructs against moving the arms to begin the down swing, and to pull them down with the hips and legs:

“…the lower part of the body, letting your arms and hands follow…”

He couldn’t have been any clearer about it, could he?

Of course, he had a full pivot with the hips and legs to get the shoulder turn at the top, so it is a different swing down from the top than you will see from any Modern Golf Swing practitioner.

That leverage created by his lower body action and his release are what create the “whip move,” not the arms or hands – it’s even in the thumbnail, look at his hips!

A nearly three-minute video focusing on only the arm action in the down swing without ever mentioning the leveraging action of the hips and legs to pull the arms down naturally… isn’t Ben Hogan, not in the least.

Hogan didn’t talk about anything to do with the hands and arms in that clip, except to mention that they are pulled down by the lower body action.

Because, if you’re in the correct position at the top, you don’t have to think about the arm action whatsoever.

One commenter got it – “When I saw the title and thumbnail of Hogan I was so ready to say get out of my chair and give a standing O on the lesson, but I personally think this one is a rare miss…”

To which comment, someone (of course) responded, “He’s not wrong.”

Another Ben…

What do you all think their patron saint Ben Hogan would have to say about his image being put onto this clip of Modern Golf Swing methodology?

Tell me in the comments, if you wish!

Between golf swing motions and make a zillion trading crypto/stocks/futures with ME promotions, I have a serious case of “Oy! Enough!!” More importantly, was that a robo lawn mower or a new fangles ball picker/vacuum roving about on the range?

    Stay warm out there everyone!

Didn’t even notice that, Peter! 😂

Think of how simple it is to make a step and throw motion, Peter. In fact, think of how much easier it would be now to learn a much more complicated game with regards to proper technique – tennis. The Modern Golf Swing makes tennis look ridiculously simple.

Great catch there, AK – 22K views in 5 years, what a tragedy. And videos out there completely mangling it, hundreds of thousands to millions of views.

Steve Elkington had a great Classic Golf Swing motion as well, which is why he so quickly grasped what Jack was telling him. It’s natural motion.

Burke was a legend haha And yh it’s such a shame he’s not more well known, until his death he was the oldest living masters champion as well! Glad Maves and Elkington got to shoot with him. Being Canadian did you ever come across Mike Maves?

The modern world of Golf is so strange. Pros teach the golf swing as if it’s algebra, people who play at the same course for years with markers use range finders, gps, and smart grips to know distance, and tour players use hybrids and 460cc drivers. I find waxgolf to be a place of solace.
