Matt McCarty – Lefty Classic Golf Swinger On The PGA Tour

I’ve never heard of this player, even though he he’s defending his title this weekend on the PGA Tour, but Mr. McJohn suggested I have a look at this lefty Classic Golf Swinger – so I did.

Sure enough, a good-looking Classic Golf Swing there, with load of power, and there’s only one thing in his swing that gives me a little pause watching him.

You can just see the power oozing out of his top position before he starts back down, and it’s a lovely action from the 27 year old:

Here’s a sequence of the swing view down the line:

Nice posture over the ball, erect and relaxed, great top position with a big hip turn and fully leverage coming down with that weight transfer into the leading foot and a powerful impact position.

That super-raised trailing heel at impact tells you what’s going on – he’s really rotation through the bottom and into the finish, and that finish position is the only thing that would cause me concern, mechanically:

That’s a lot of lower back and middle spine twist, and to be honest, I don’t think he needs to do that for his power, because the ball is already long gone by this time.

He could alleviate most of that twisting by releasing his trailing foot rather digging in with the toe.

Time will tell whether his back can withstand this excessive twisting swing after swing, season after season, but there is nothing in his swing from address to impact that I would find to critique, but I’ll see if I can find a face-on view somewhere to give it another go-over.

Nice to see a Classic Golf Swing on the Tour, however – it’s just a shame that it’s only one player or two at a given time.
