I’ve been quiet in recent weeks due to not having much to say about golf swing mechanics, due to the fact that I’m deeply into the issue of the grip and how it changes everything in the swing process.
I can say at the moment that the likely reason my efforts to replicate Mike Dunaway’s swing action comes down to the grip issue.
Also evident is the reason I spent most of the winter of ’22-’23 hitting the ball left on the indoor simulators – also down to the grip.
Now, as it pertains to Mr. Dunaway, you all know that I’ve said many times that you can completely fail to understand the concept behind an explanation, until you actually replicate the motion in question, at which point it becomes comically clear what is going on and how you failed to get it until then.
With Dunaway, that moment arrived yesterday while I was working on his pivot and down swing.
I made a critical discovery regarding weight transfer and footwork when I finally came to understand how and why Dunaway stayed on his right (trailing foot) for so long into the down swing:
He was “using the ground,” and doing it properly, not what the clueless pundits on television and Youtube say today’s players are doing.
I’ve always noticed what he was doing, but didn’t appreciate the significance of it until I recreated the action, at which point it all became crystal clear.
If I’m correct in my assessment, I don’t see how any other golf swing model could even come close to the leverage and power generation in this particular model, and that’s where I am at the moment.
I should be garnering new video to post to the site next week, and from there, I daresay it should be an interesting spring and summer.
More to come.

Waiting anxiously. My distance has dropped and I don’t want to go down a rabbit-hole just to reverse direction when you have this figured out.
I’m on it, Pete! Trust me, I’m as anxious as you are to regain lost distance. I know I’m getting older, but it just doesn’t seem fair that I can’t drive it as far as I was 15 years ago. Unacceptable! 😉
I was looking at the Fernando Cano Ben Hogan videos on YouTube and I see similarities between the two. Both have weight on the right leg through impact and the movement to the left is from the momentum of the clubhead to pretty much fully extended shaft parallel to the ground on the through swing. This is very much pronounced in Mike Dunaway.
And Pete, if you’re concerned about rabbit hole, and rightfully so, watch those videos with the sound on. They are poetic.
And if I have descended into a rabbit hole with this comment please let me know – pull me up!
All the best DJ. always look forward to your observations.
One of my favourite videos, Geoff – I have several Gifs on the site from it.
You’ll notice in addition to what you observed, no spinning out from Hogan to clear the hips, because they moved freely in the back pivot.
Good stuff, sir! 😊
