It amazes me how far away from the proper MCS setup I strayed in the years since producing and releasing the “E = MCS” swing video (which is no longer available because there were certain things about my swing at the time that I detest, so I’ll have to re-shoot it).
I talk about how the swing is vertical and not rotary, which if you wish to swing in this manner requires the proper setup shown down the line, and I actually nearly nailed it when I was making the video.
You’ll recall my recent posting where I demonstrated that, in order to have the vertical arm position in the setup, you must have the correct balance and posture:
Here below is a 7 iron swing, both in real time speed and slo-mo, where I had a much better posture than I’ve had of late due to getting away from the setup principles, but when I was shooting clips for the video, I had close to the optimal setup:
I was aiming at the white flag that you can see directly in front of me, and notice how quickly one can set up to make a swing when you just focus on the proper setup.
I establish the distance with my left arm and then step into position – the only issue in this swing is that I was swinging left-dominant, which I’ve fixed in the intervening time.
Were I playing a round of actual golf, I might take a little more time, but on the range, I don’t know why one would need more time than I take above.
As for the setup:
… it’s not bad, but a slight adjustment in the balance would likely get my arms to nearly completely vertical – we’re talking a couple of degrees difference in the upper arm.
The setup routine isn’t bad, but I’ve devised a different one that I’m currently using which should ensure I do it the same way every time without variation, beginning with making sure that my posture is optimal and gives me as vertical an arm position as possible and the optimal pivot action.
More to come.
