I might add as well that in addition to setup being crucial to a stable golf swing, you also require proper mechanics – which are impossible without the correct setup.
So it all flows from one thing, the setup.
When you get that right, then all you have to worry about is the actual swing motion, which is nothing more than a back pivot to prime your swing machine to swing down and through from the top.
You might be inclined to think that it’s more complicated than that, especially since I’ve personally spent a decade and a half researching it, but the research was spent essentially looking for things to take out of a very complicated thing according to golf swing instruction.
All I’ve been trying to do, probably since 2010 going forward, has been to try to eliminate all nonessential motion or compensation, leaving the simplest golf swing motion possible.
In this regard, it begins and ends with the setup – when you have it, all you’re doing is swinging down and through, whether it’s the Driver or a wedge.
Here below, a diagonal view of my 5 iron swing from the “E = MCS” video back in 2017:
As with every club from wedge to long iron, you’re not doing anything more than swinging down and through, and letting the ball get in the way of the club face as it travels the arc.
I mention the wedges and irons because people get caught up trying to lift or pick the ball when the loft of the iron provides the necessary spin and lift – all you have to do is make contact before the swing bottom.
So, the ball is sitting there, you swing down and through, and because the ball is placed before the swing bottom, the iron/wedge will strike the ball before the ground and by the time it reaches the swing bottom, that ball is already on its way:
The better your setup, the more you’ll be able to simply pivot back and then swing down and through without having to compensate or manipulate the club.
The more stable your swing, the more leverage you can generate through the simple action of the hips and legs with the weight transfer providing the engine for said leverage – and if the ball position and your grip are correct, you will impact the ball at the right spot in the down swing with a square club face.
Just swing down and through:
Sort of like this fellow:
We will never have the precision and stability of an Iron Byron, but following proper setup and swing principles will take you as close to it as possible.
