OK – Let Me Show You Something YouTuby That Completely Reverses Ben Hogan

The reason I keep mentioning Ben Hogan in my tirades about YouTube instruction is because Ben Hogan’s swing model has become the pseudo-standard for Modern Golf Swing instruction.

Meaning, everyone thinks they are modeling Ben Hogan with their misguided teaching, but it’s so far from the actual Hogan as to be unrecognizable – and he would drop dead if he were still with us, I can assure you.

Not only is it wrong, it’s evolving further and further from reality, as I’ve pointed out – the first thing you saw was the X-Factor twisting of the lower spine to provide the shoulder turn in a right-dominant setup.

Now, I guess, because of the untold damage having been wrought upon uncounted spines, you have the reversion to the Stack & Tilt methodology (keeping oneself on the left side) in order to get the shoulder turn without wrecking the back.

You can see it here, where the instructor actually tells you to adopt a “neutral spine” setup instead of the proper right-tilting spine:

This is a deliberate departure from the previous X-Factor method, but a return to the old Stack & Tilt type of setup that will allow the reverse-pivot back swing and thus avoid the twisting of the lower back.

It’s still wrong, but in different ways. Follow me below for the tragedy:

Reverse-Pivot vs Ben Hogan Top

Yes – watch the video and this instructor actually tells you to have a left-leaning spine at the top.

Disclosure – I don’t have anything personal against seemingly well-intentioned people trying to convey what they think is expertise, and I have nothing against this gent.

He seems a decent enough chap and nowhere near as arrogant as some of the miscreants of swing instruction out there, so I feel somewhat sad at times pointing out something that I simply must point out to save people going down these rabbit holes.

However, let’s take a look at something that will boggle the mind of anyone who knows even a little about Hogan’s swing (most instructors trying to teach Hoganology fall into this “knowing a very little” category):

Three minutes of absolute agony, if you know anything about how Ben Hogan actually swung.

I really only have to have put up the first two comparisons between him and Hogan to prove how far afield this Modern Golf Swing instruction is going, but he literally says in the video that the following position would be horribly incorrect:

Ben Hogan

The only thing wrong with his position is that his hips haven’t turned because he’s got his leading foot nailed down, whereas Hogan properly let the leading heel come up to allow the hip turn.

Even worse, he actually hits Hogan’s down swing position perfectly and declares it “wrong” because you’ll get stuck:

Here’s a perfect example of how having a right-tilted spine in the setup, at the top and coming back down get you really stuck:

I will point out, once more, that all of this convoluted mess, from the X-Factor, to the Reverse-Pivot swing now taking center stage, comes from the simple decision made by someone, somewhere, that one must swing with both feel nailed firmly to the ground on the back pivot.

“Too many moving parts, the Modern Golf Swing is quieter and simpler…”

We’re done here.

But I think I hear something coming from Texas, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area…

feels good to be able to talk to the wax community when you can’t talk to anybody about “proper” golf because you get odd looks from people for being a genuine student of the game.

The Hogan condundrum is really perplexing, DJ. You’re right this guy is a decent chap, and not like the usual so called Hogan hookum-peddlers. But even still despite having multiple video clips (a swing only takes a few seconds) easily accessible, they can’t repeat or demonstrate his swing accurately.

*Link removed due to being unsecure, see DJ’s comment below for Tom Watson swing gif**

the elderly great Tom Watson striping a two iron with too many moving parts we’re told haha

thanks. I think of Watson as the end of an era 😦 Hopefully some young guys in the future can spur the game back to what it was
