“DJ, Why Are You So Negative?” Here’s One Reason

I was lamenting to Mrs. DJ that I can’t seem to write positive posts when it comes to the golf swing, which is a change from years ago.

It seems that every time I put my fingers on the keyboard, what comes out is going to end up being negative, but I have just figured out why that is.

I was conducting swing research in the early years and, until I built my own swing model using Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan, I was looking at so many great golfers and swings from the Classic Golf Swing era.

Even in the modern era, I had Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Bubba Watson to analyze and comment about, so it was all good because they swung in the Classic style.

Even with the Modern Golf Swing, years ago, my only real issue was usually just the nailed-down leading heel and the twisting lower back.

Jason Day 2014 – Good Times

Brooks Koepka, Jason Day, Ernie Els, Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott – modern swingers but if they had allowed the leading heel to separate, they would have instantly been awesome Classic Golf Swing technicians.

Now, however, I am seeing worse and worse swing models from the modern pros and I no longer have to study Classic era greats to figure out how to build a golf swing model.

So now, I’m primarily occupied with fighting this deterioration of golf swing mechanics and there goes anything positive I might have to say, because there literally is nearly nothing out there to point out positively.

Take a look for example at this gem that just came across my feed, and it’s called Something Something For a PERFECT Backswing:

Let me show you how far back this student takes it with the man pulling at him, and I have to say:

… that I’m still waiting for a back swing, let alone a “perfect one.”

The student’s leading arm is barely past parallel to the ground – even Jon Rahm has a longer back swing than that!

Now, as for what really drives me crazy, take a look at this poor student’s leg and foot action coming through the bottom of the down swing:

My friends, this is malpractice.

Look at that hyperextending leading knee and the rolling ankle – now, tell me how long this man is going to stay healthy swinging at speed with this type of lower body action?

Not to mention, that is a baseball swing (and not a particularly good one), for the love of all that is good in this world:

… his shoulders are wide open at the swing bottom, he’s going to slice or hosel it off the planet with anything resembling this motion, and I’ve had shorter commutes to work than the distance his head travels from the top to the swing bottom.

Before you tell me that it’s just a practice exercise, that he really wouldn’t pivot this way in a real swing – watch the “guru’s” hands – he is moving that student’s upper body precisely this way himself, and thinks it’s good enough to post on YouTube.

This is more Mark McGwire than Mark O’Meara, let me tell you.

Now, if anyone can find anything positive about this particular clip to add to what I’ve had to say about it, be my guest!

two comments: Milo Lines WAS a baseball player and I once played behind Mark McGuire at Riviera! McGuire had the stiffest, heaviest shaft on a drive I had ever seen. But he hit the thing a mile.

Milo has a following, but I took a look a couple of years ago and just didn’t understand how this swing worked…There are a ton of gurus out there everywhere you look…don’t step on them, they’ll bite you! 😜

Milo Lines WAS a baseball player…

      Ah… Peter…

… and yes, I imagine Mark McGwire would have hit that ball a country mile.

This is the last one, I promise…As does Performance Golf, which has THE SECRET to the straight shot. Only $97 and you get instant access to 3 drills that’ll straighten out the bsll flight of any golfer in a mere 90 minutes!! apparently, this secret extends the hitting zone from the 2 inches before he ball and the 2 inches after the ball to..something more…elongated. Thoug i am not sure what good that’ll do you if the clubface isn’t square at contact…$97US and the secret is yours…

It’s amazing that the Tour pros aren’t beating the doors down to get their hands on this material.

As straight as you can point – that’s Moe Norman ball-striking – where are all the clients who turned pro after buying this?

If you’re selling anything to do with skill and athleticism, and you don’t admit that “results may vary,” then you’re selling snake oil.
