I’ve already briefly mentioned this fellow when talking about how so-called Ben Hogan “experts” are either completely misinterpreting what Hogan did or flat-out saying outlandish things that Hogan would have swatted away like a pesky fly.
I don’t even look for this stuff, it just comes across my feed because I am always searching golfers like Hogan, Nicklaus and other greats of the Classic Golf Swing era.
This one is particularly egregious, and I don’t point these people out for mobs to descend upon them with torches and pitchforks – it’s to point out just how bereft of quality most of the golf instruction is that you’ll find online.
“Watch Me Swing Like Hogan!”
The first video is just pathetic – the swing he demonstrates has absolutely no Ben Hogan in it whatsoever:
In this above video, he says at the 4:00 mark as well that the down swing starts “from the ground up,” which I didn’t highlight because this first video was just to show you what a Hogan “expert” thinks Hogan was doing.
So, we all know that the back pivot and the swing start from the ground up, because you’re using your hips and legs, right?
Let’s see what Hogan had to say in his own words about it:
Well the most important thing in the golf swing to me, is the movement of the lower body from the top of the swing. And if you don’t mind, I’ll demonstrate.
First off it starts, down below in your knees and your hips. At the top of the swing, you move the lower part of your body – not your shoulders – the lower part of the body, letting your arms and hands follow, bringing you into position to hit…
… most people do it, entirely opposite – they rotate their shoulders first instead of their lower body. As a result, they come across the ball (over the top) and hit the outside of the ball instead of the back of it.”
O.K., so Hogan says the swing begins with the movement of the lower body, letting the arms and hands follow.
“Wrong!” says this fellow, and proceeds to tell you exactly the opposite of what Hogan has just said, in this video below:
Here are some gems in his delivery, starting right at the beginning and tragically getting worse by the second, as he imitates the Hindenburg:
0:00 – There’s a ton of talk today about “firing your hips” to hit the golf ball and just using your hips – leave the arms alone and don’t do anything with your shoulders… just use your hips and you’ll hit the ball and everything will be great…
There’s probably a ton of talk about it because it’s called the “kinetic chain,” and because that’s exactly what Hogan says to do in his clip above?
What did Hogan say about it? Ah yes – the exact thing this fellow quotes as being a “ton of talk”:
… you move the lower part of your body – not your shoulders – the lower part of the body, letting your arms and hands follow.
He continues:
… and this is one of the biggest problems I see in golf swings is that this idea of firing your hips is leading to inconsistent contact and power loss – two things you’d never think would happen!
I’m sorry – are you not the same fellow who purports to be able to teach people Ben Hogan’s golf swing? While at the same time making videos like this directly contradicting what Ben Hogan said about the down swing?
Unbelievable. But it gets worse:
00:40 – I’ll often see in the comments section – some people will say, “Hey you can’t use your shoulders to start the down swing – that’s gonna always make you come over the top. You just fire your hips… leave the arms alone and just let the club drop magically…”
This is one really risky proposition! Because if I go to the top and I just fire my hips, look at this… (proceeds to do an Elvis Presley impression)…
Aaaand, we’re done here. He not only directly contradicts Hogan, he mocks the exact thing that Hogan said one should do in the down swing – because of course the commenters know more about golf swing mechanics than this fraud.
Let’s put his statement first below with Hogan’s exact phrasing from his own video clip:
Him: Some people will say, “Hey you can’t use your shoulders to start the down swing – that’s gonna always make you come over the top. You just fire your hips… leave the arms alone and just let the club drop magically…”
Hogan: you move the lower part of your body – not your shoulders – the lower part of the body, letting your arms and hands follow.
I feel like I’m shooting a fish in a barrel here, but once again, his “Hogan” swing beside Hogan at the top:
… and bear in mind that he’s actually trying to imitate Hogan in this swing clip, because he’s talking about Hogan’s hip action.
Compare that above to a fellow you may know, who studied Hogan’s pivot back in 2014 and fashioned a golf swing model using that “perfect pivot” action without trying to actually copy Ben Hogan’s swing (because there’s only ever been and will only ever be one Ben Hogan), just taking the pivot from it:
I didn’t even go looking for this top pic – it was in my blog stats this morning on clicks, meaning someone had clicked on that pic of my swing at the top whilst reading one of my posts today and I’ve just put it beside Hogan’s top position.
The angles are slightly different, as Hogan’s was diagonal and mine is straight on, but you see what you see.
Here’s the actual swing, from August 2019:
Some people actually look at what Ben Hogan was doing, listen to what he said, and they actually know what he was doing in his swing.
Some people… definitely don’t.

I am very glad the technology does not exist that would raise people from the dead with the mental faculties from their prime. Ben Hogan would probably be unable to play golf due to broken hands.
How that guy uploads a video claiming to speak on Ben Hogan, with confidence, getting it as wrong as he did (he did the squat as well!),astounds me.
He’s rolling in his grave.
And people who give their time and money to these imposters are being taken advantage of.
