The Time Someone Thought I Was Ben Hogan (Video Clips)

All of this Ben Hogan talk has reminded me of something amusing that happened to me a few years back.

The funny thing is – I have never pretended or tried to swing like Ben Hogan except for in the video “The Ben Hogan Project” in 2014 in which I did wear a driving cap like Hogan for the mood.

In that video, if I recall, I didn’t even really try to swing exactly like Hogan, I just pointed out his pivot action, later known as the “Perfect Pivot” in my subsequent videos, and to debunk all of the nonsense about his swing that so irritated me after I’d taken a hard look at his mechanics.

In these video clips below, from September 22, 2008, I simply dressed in what I had at hand during that season of research, and I would sometimes wear the bucket hat that you have seen me wearing in a 5 iron clip from 2007 or another of a different color.

I had two or three driving caps and thought they looked better than a ball cap as well, so there is the only reason anyone might accuse me of trying to look like Hogan.

So, back around 2014 or so, I had posted this impact pic of my Pitching Wedge swing:

… on a WAX Golf Facebook page that I was maintaining at the time, and someone actually commented something along the lines of, “that’s a great impact picture of Ben Hogan there!  Would you know where that was taken and do you have the video clip?”

It couldn’t have been Hogan, of course – because this swing model was a left-loaded model similar to Stack & Tilt, however it wasn’t S&T because I was swinging with full and free hip turn and a lifting leading heel.

Pay particular attention to how stable my head position was throughout the swing in all three clips compared to all of the Squat & Dumpers.

That said, I would kill to be lean like that again, when I was 38 years old:

I eventually determined that this swing model wasn’t optimal, because of the left-loading – it was great for wedges, but the longer the club and the lower the loft, the more you would need to be center or right-loaded.

Too steep a descent for anything longer than a 5 iron, I concluded.

7 Iron

Even though it got increasingly away from optimal the longer the clubs, I still killed the ball with this swing model.

As I’ve always said, distance was never a problem for me – I was looking for the swing that would let me keep my power and improve my accuracy and consistency.

5 Iron

Even though my weight was left-loaded, how much closer to Ben Hogan do you reckon I was (when I wasn’t even trying to be Hogan at all, just swinging my swing), compared to all of the “experts” and “gurus” and professional golfers?

Ben Hogan put on a stretcher with a lot of muscle gain, and a strong tan haha Your swing looks miles closer than the experts and gurus.Very controlled and stable. I found when I tried to keep my left arm straight I ended up too steep. I find it more natural to let it bend similar to Watson.

You nailed it, silly – when that happened, I wondered how the commenter had missed the, erm… heavy tan Hogan would had to have had for that to be him. The “m” word here wouldn’t be “myelin,” rather “melanin.” 😂😂

And correct – the left arm is the same length at address and impact, so unless you’re casting the club on the down swing, it matters little if it is absolutely straight or has a little bend in it at the top.
