The “Science” Behind Rory McIlroy’s “Perfect Swing”

I ran across this particular YouTube clip today purporting to show the “science of Rory McIlroy’s Perfect Swing,” and I’d ask you all to point out the actual science for me.

I’ve already pointed out to you my suspicion as to what ails Rory in his horrific driving accuracy from the tee, and I’m sorry – if a golf swing was even in the neighborhood of being perfect, he wouldn’t be 102nd in driving accuracy (60.29%) and 134th in G.I.R. (65.70%) in his 2024 season stats.

That’s just a fact, let alone common sense.

This is giving me shades of Tiger Woods from the ’97-’14 era when all of his different iterations of swing were being praised and called “perfect” all while he was shredding his knee and lower back with these perfect swings.

At least Tiger had the numbers that made people claim perfection.  Rory’s are nothing about which to write home, unfortunately.

In fact, if you take a look at Rory’s approaches rankings from different distances, his highest rankings are 18th in approaches over 275 yards (because of his power and length) and 18th in 75-100 yards (not bad, but barely in the top 20), and the rest of his rankings are dire for a man with a “perfect swing.”

Now, take a look at the below clip, if you will:

Did you get the science part?  Aside from a computerized graphic showing his swing from the rear, what is this giving us?

To be honest, it just reinforces my comments on Rory’s swing, which is very powerful, don’t get me wrong.

Now, he does get some leading heel lift on the back pivot, which has appeared and disappeared in his swings through the years.

However, there is an element of hyper-twisting in his lower back at the top and his spine has three different angles from setup, top and impact – not the paragon of stability there, and you wonder why he’s all over the place accuracy-wise.

You couldn’t hope to groove a consistent ball action without hitting a million balls per day with that kind of motion going on with the spine angle.

I’m not a perfect swinger by any means, but I do know a bit about athletic motion and it is optimal if you’re standing in the same spot through an entire motion to keep a consistent spine angle throughout.

As I highlighted in the previous Rory post about his driving, he moves back and forth during the swing – you can see it clearly in the above clip with even an iron, and here again is his lateral action with the driver with the blue line showing his right hip at the setup, the red line is where it is at  the top and the yellow at impact:

A move that produces power, no doubt – but horrifically inconsistent.

And so, not even sniffing perfect.

Pick two items of Mc IIroy’s swing that if changed, would lead to marked improvement in consistency? Why would he NOT listen to a comment is posed in that manner? You are so right pointing out that RESULTS MATTER!

Hello, Peter! I hope you’ve been well and your lad as well 🙂

Results do indeed matter, don’t they? Unfortunately, Rory won’t be reading this nor any other of my posts about him, and I daresay none of his team would bring them to his attention. Golf instruction is a closed shop and unless you’re already in, no one will pay you any heed.

But I would be salivating at the prospect of a swinger like Rory – intelligent, motivated, athletically blessed and still only 35 years old. I was driving the ball over 350 yards at 39, even if I’m a little larger than he. With an optimal swing action, and by that I mean mechanically-sound (and a tweak or two is all he needs), he’d tear it up for at least another decade, and that majors drought would end quickly.

I wish him the best (after all, he rooted for the Raptors in ’19), and hope someone, somewhere, leads him to improved mechanics while he’s still young and fit!
