What appeared to be another catastrophe is not as bad as I feared – I came down with the nasty flu variant in our area last week (hence the lack of posting recently), which is bound to happen with two college-aged kids and one in high school picking up bugs on campus.
I have chronic bronchitis and a pre-asthmatic condition, so when I get the flu, it puts me right out and I’ve not been able to do much for a few days while I try to rest and recover.
Those of you who were around back in the winter of ’18-’19 will remember that I ended up in the Emergency after New Year’s because my coughing was so violent that I would literally pass out (medical term is cough syncope), and I ended up with a cracked rib and black eye from various falls.
But that’s just to explain where I’ve been the past few days – the thing is, while getting my rest, I’ve been able to go over what I have done so far in the video-making process and make notes on how to best present the material, and I’ve re-worked the order and explanation of the different segments.
I found that, looking over past videos, I was ordering the segments in a way I no longer find optimal.
For someone brand new at swinging, or just getting into it, the order is very important to avoid confusion – for the old hand swingers, the order may not be so important, but this is what I’ve come up with:
- Grip – This is the most important part of the swing because our hands are the only parts of our bodies that touch the club. Get that wrong, and you’re dead in the water from the start. So, I’ll be starting with the grip and talking about the Classic Golf Swing – especially the Jack Nicklaus grip concept.
- The “Leaning A” Setup – Once you have a proper grip established, you can build your setup position. This will include how it should look face-on (with a simple trick to get that setup) as well as the DTL view to ensure proper posture over the ball.
You’ll notice that this one picture sequence of the Golden Bear above can be used to illustrate the first three concepts of grip, setup and ball position.
- Ball Position – The genius of the “Leaning A” setup (it isn’t mine, I just figured it out watching the Classic era swingers and noting what similarities they shared) is that it allows one standard setup for all clubs. The only things that change are the stance width, posture (it will be lower for a wedge than with the driver, of course) and the ball positions themselves. Having had the setup explained, it will be easy to understand the concept of ball position for the different clubs.

- The “Perfect Pivot” Action – Here is the really good stuff, which not even the longest members will have seen. I introduce the Fixed Swing Point (the C7 vertebra), which most around here know already, but now the new pivot concept using the feet and focusing on the shoulders, in order to make that Ben Hogan-esqe pivot with full and free hip turn but with a lower leading heel lift. Here, you will see how the concept of “Swinging In The Box” applies.
- Back Pivot – very straight-forward, having just gone through the “Perfect Pivot” action. One simply uses the concepts but now with the club in hand.
- Down Swing – Also very straight-forward, because of the swing bottom concept that applies to all clubs from Driver to Wedge. Again, you will use the same concept that was introduced in the “Perfect Pivot” segment.

- The Finish – Here, we will explore how the proper implementation of the MCS Golf Swing principles from address to impact conclude with the release of trailing foot and a balanced finish on the leading foot.
So, this has taken me an afternoon to key out, and I’m spent. I’ll be continuing the mental work on this video until I have the strength to get back to the computer and sit for more than a few minutes before having to quit.
Wishing you all a great week, and I’ll be back when I have more to add. I likely won’t be posting much about anything until the video project is completed, as I really don’t have the inclination right now to wade through rage-bait YouTube content.
More to come.

Rest easy, DJ. My college kid has had the same experience – nothing like a college campus with 30,000+ others to get flu cranking! A few more day/weekss is not a big deal….Most importnantly, get better and have a lovely holiday season!
Thanks, Peter – all the best to you and yours as well! 🙂
great summary in this post, also feel better soon!
