Here is something I just fell across today while taking a little jaunt through YouTube.
You will all know our friendly baseball-player-turned-golf-instructor-teaching-a-baseball-swing, by now, so he needs no introduction.
The clip that I came across is the analysis of Jack Nicklaus’ driver swing clip from the 1963 Masters, one I’ve shown you all before.
My gif:
Now, the clip I saw today:
Notice the highlighting of the left knee (the “Swinging Gate,” I call it) and the leading heel lift, which he actually mentions.
You would think, “OK, he knows what Jack was doing, this is going to be what he’s teaching, for sure!”
And… you’d be wrong.
I literally clicked on the first video in the library, meaning it’s the last video posted to the account, just 5 hours ago, to be precise, and this is what he’s teaching, ironically titled “The Left Hip Move You NEED For An Athletic Swing!”
Just watch about a minute from the 6 minute mark:
First of all, what they’re trying to fix has never been seen before from any swinger of any quality – how on earth do you get the left hip going past the leading foot on a down swing?
You’d fall over on your face – I would love to actually see this being done.
Not to mention, how are you an instructor in the game and setting up for an iron shot with the ball where it should be with the driver?
Second, “athletic swing?” What we just saw?
I don’t know about you all, but how is it possible to analyze Jack Nicklaus’ golf swing, talk about the footwork and then swing completely flat-footed with a down swing motion that looks more like trying to push a refrigerator down the target line with your hands and club?
I do have some hope for the future, though, a tiny sliver – in another clip of his, where he’s working with a lad with a very good golf swing who likely just has a club face problem, he starts to completely change his swing mechanics:
… and in the comments, someone cynically points out the true purpose of that lesson:
For those who can’t read the print in the screen capture, the comment says:
His release is late that is all, it’s not the plane. The kid has a great swing, now he’s going to spend months with you changing his swing. Repeat business I guess
My immediate thought was, “Aren’t they spending lesson after lesson telling people that the first move in the Modern Golf Swing is to lower the arms?!?”
Like this?
And that just about sums up what I’ve been saying about Modern Golf instruction for years – it’s not to make you better, it’s to separate you from your money, for lots of lessons, for a long time.
I tell you, if I had no conscience, I’d jump head first into this pool of infinite grifting that is known as Modern Golf.
Unfortunately, I do.

“And that just about sums up what I’ve been saying about Modern Golf instruction for years – it’s not to make you better, it’s to separate you from your money, for lots of lessons, for a long time.” the seperate moves instruction is maddening apart from tiny chips, the swing is supposed to be one piece
Agreed.
