Finally – A Young Amateur With A Classic Golf Swing!

I was sent a couple of swings of a young amateur golfer Down Under, and his dad tells me that he played a young lad 9-10 years ago, stopped playing and resumed the game about a year ago.

I have to confirm his exact age, but he’s obviously mid-to-late teens, and I love this swing action.  It’s obviously a Classic Golf Swing, or you wouldn’t be seeing it.

I’ve got a driver swing in slow motion and an iron swing in real time, so let’s just rinse our palates from all of the Modern Golf Swing dreck and enjoy a pretty good amateur swing that is actually mechanically-correct:

You can see the very nice pivot with the hips and legs turning naturally, the low-lifting leading heel, very Hogan-style pivot, and great foot-work on the down swing and finish.

Even before the swing, a great, upright and balanced setup to the ball, this is very nice to see from a young amateur player, let me tell you:

Very, very good swing for being a year back into swinging, I must say.

I have nothing to critique with this iron swing, perhaps I’d see something with the face-on angle, because the driver swing is face-on and I have but one critique on the setup:

The ball is a little too inside the left heel to what I would want to see, and the knock-on effect, you can see, is that the young man has a bit too much lean in the “Leaning A-“ you’d want to see that head a little closer to center, but that’s all I can find to say with regards to critiquing.

Once he’s in action, a great pivot once again, and a fabulous impact-follow-through sequence – see the release of the trailing foot through impact, and that slight flaw at the setup rears its head at impact:

… where you have the forward-leaning shaft due to the ball position, when you want a slightly backward-leaning shaft with the driver and:

… the follow-through has that reverse-C aspect with a pronounced backward lean, which would be my concern in the whole matter – when you get older, that position post-impact could be an injury risk in the lumbar region.

This young Aussie amateur is still young, so that’s not an immediate concern, but he would certainly improve his driving metrics with that ball adjustment and a more optimal impact position.

All in all however, I grade this swing an A- as it’s so, so close to exactly what I would expect to see from a swinger – this is a better swing technique than virtually every pro on Tour from a mechanical-soundness aspect.

I thank the young man’s dad for forwarding these clips, because it is certainly easier on my mental health than what I’ve been watching and critiquing of late!
