I have just uploaded a swing clip of myself hitting three irons down the line from August 16, 2022.
The setup, I have to say, is absolutely nailed, at least from the down the line view.
Face on, I am not in love with because of the work I’ve done in the intervening 2.5 years, but I have nothing to pick at with this view.
If you want to know how sweetly I was striking all of these irons, here is a picture I took of the spot where I was set up for my down the line shots, after I was finished my session, and I was taking the balls off the turf, not teed up:
Looking at the spot, I am reminded of Moe Norman’s declaration when hitting irons that “I take bacon strips, not pork chops,” and there is a nice pork chop gouge beside my spot (upwards to the left), where someone did something pork chop-ish, for comparison.
I’ll add that in 2022, I had exactly 3 swing sessions that August, this day being the 2nd, so it goes to show you – you don’t have to hit millions of balls for hours on end every single day, if you have a solid and mechanically-sound swing model.
Also: I’ve begun to post videos regularly on Youtube & Instagram now, so if you happen to visit my pages, I’d ask you to kindly subscribe and like, if you please!
I would have to practice more than that, of course, were I to think of competing in tournaments, but for a swing researcher who probably didn’t even average one session per week that summer, that was how cleanly I could pick the balls with my irons when I did hit them.
As I’ve said, I mostly hit Driver during my swing sessions because if you can hit the Driver well, the irons and wedges should be a breeze.
Here’s a little heart-breaker for yours truly – I went after a couple of 5 irons near the end of the session and actually carried one to the 245 yard green down the fairway – and when I got home to look at the video, it was blurred!
Don’t know what happened there, but I was very disappointed not to have that blast on clear video for analysis.
I should have have some face-on swings with irons from the session up in short order.
More to come!

hi DJ I’m fascinated as always by your postings. My instructor said to me at my first lesson (11 years ago). “90 % of the errors in a golf swing come rom the set up and the other 10% come from the set up!” : – )
my question is “why do you address the ball with the club in your left hand?”
thanks Neil
Your instructor seems to have known a thing or two, Neil! 😉
I was setting up left hand first because the left or leading hand grip sets up the left or leading side – so many golfers are preoccupied with the lower hand grip that they set up with no room to clear the leading hip and shoulder into impact. This is why you see so many golfers contorting themselves because they’ve shorted themselves on the leading side.
For me, a good solution is to set up to the ball using the leading side, then to establish the lower hand grip. It’s not something I would say is absolutely necessary, but it works for me 🙂
