Swing Videos Are Too Long – I’m Getting Brutally To The Point

I have come to suspect that the main reason people struggle to learn anything from golf swing instructional videos is simply that they are too long.

I have been watching more videos, mine included, on the swing, and there is just too much talking and digression – I’m being brutally critical here, and I’m not saying that they aren’t any good, just that they are too long.

When you are trying to learn something, how much are you going to retain from an hour-long presentation?

Really, how much?

I’ve worked with people in person who had all of my videos, which they said were great, but then when it came down to seeing how much of it they had retained between watching the videos and meeting me… it wasn’t good.

And I put that down to the video maker, not the learner.

Sure, there are those who are pretty adept at the swing to begin with, who want to take things to the next level, and who want to hear every single word I may have to say on the golf swing, theory-wise, but this isn’t a theory lesson, this coming video.

It is an instructional video on how to grip the club, build an address stance over the ball, and how to pivot back and swing down and through.

Basically, five components on the swing, if you break them down:

  1. Grip
  2. Stance & Posture
  3. Ball Position
  4. Back Pivot
  5. Down Swing

There will be a sixth unofficial component, and that will be showing and demonstrating the Hogan “Perfect Pivot” action and presenting a pivot drill so that Component 4 doesn’t tie you into knots when it comes to that part:

Now, let me just ask you to take a look at this position I was able to achieve at the age of 45 (from “The Kinesiology Of The MCS Golf Swing” video),

Barely any leading heel lift, a full hip turn and shoulders turned well past 90 degrees – when I was 45.  That is the Ben Hogan “Perfect Pivot” action you will be getting in this video.

It’s amazing to me that I was able to perform this pivot even over ten years ago but used to swing more often than not with the higher-heel lift Ben Hogan pivot from when he was younger, more like Jack Nicklaus’ pivot action.

I can still do this today if you ask me to, and I’m now 56.

The golf pivot has nothing to do with how young and flexible you are, but how well you build your setup and how well you perform the hip and leg action.

That gif. above shows that you swing the club with your body – the arms and hands only come along for the ride.

I have promised a longer and more in-depth analysis of the MCS Golf Swing theory and how to swing later this year, and we’ll all get to that in a few months.

I am waiting to be able to swing pain-free again as I recover from a Frozen Shoulder situation on my left side, because I really want to be swinging again before making another video.

This one has been painful, process-wise, because I haven’t swung a club in a year, and because I began the video in my usual mindset of explaining any and everything.

Over the past months, I have grown less and less satisfied with this manner of dense content – I would love if you all, after watching the video, could explain on demand the principles of the five components.

I should have it completed and available this week – shooting for end of March which would be tomorrow, but it may take another day or two to wrap it up.

Looking forward to the video DJ! Yh, I was thinking about this today on the course as the weather is finally getting good. The amount of time it takes to learn a swing, is too long. “Basically, five components on the swing, if you break them down:

    Grip

    Stance & Posture

    Ball Position

    Back Pivot

    Down Swing

it really (granted nerves and muscle memory exist lol) is that simple to learn if you want to start out or keep the ball on the fairway. Of course the fun stuff like chipping, drawing, uphill lie, below the feet etc are something you find out on the journey around the course 🙂

I’m actually happy in a way that it’s taken so long to make this video, AK. I mean, when you watch it and see how simple it is, and how much shorter than my usual videos, you may be tempted to think, “this took all that time?”

In a word, yes. When I began this project last autumn, if things had gone according to plan, it would have been another swing video going 45 minutes to an hour in length, with a lot of explanations at length about everything, and that’s not what I now believe people need.

People, just as I would like in a video on learning something, need short, concise instructions, perhaps a little explanation on why this or why not that, but an hour to explain a motion that takes 2-3 seconds?

I asked myself, “How would I explain this all to a ten-year old?” Granted, a precocious ten-year old… but you see the difference right away.

Keep it simple, keep it short, and end it.
