Swinging Like Mike Dunaway Day 2 – Better!

I got some swings in today and was very pleased with the progress.

Changing mechanics so drastically takes a little time to get used to, but today I got a much better setup going and also got more of the “ringing the bell” hip tilt going with the back swing and down swing.

It’s been years since I swung in the MA/MD style and as I wrote yesterday, MD was swinging a very different way, almost all leverage (think of the judo throw) and while I’m not there yet, the setup change allowed for the hip tilt action.


The next adjustments will be a little more right knee flex on the setup and, now that I’ve got the feel for it again after years of not doing it, even more hip and shoulder tilt on the back and down swings.

Another thing will be the “drag takeaway” that you will have seen in some of Dunaway’s swings:


Some call it the “one-piece takeaway” or the “drag,” and in conversation with someone with whom I discuss the Austin/Dunaway mechanics, he revealed to me that this drag action helps get that tilt going right off the bat.

So, I’ll definitely see how that goes.  I’d definitely like to get a little tighter at the top with the elbow a little closer to the body.

You’ll see that I do just fine on that until just before I get to the top, and then there’s a little lift with the hands.  After being way steeper than that for many years, it isn’t that bad and I shouldn’t complain but I want the action as good as I can get it.


Needless to say, on my better attempts, the ball was pummeled, and I’ll have some video edited soon to post different angles.

If anyone is wondering how a swing can be so powerful while looking like any other type of swing, it’s in the leverage created by the “7” that Dunaway explained:


You just make your pivot to the top with the hip and shoulder tilt, and then reverse the action.

Seems simple, and it actually is once you grasp the concept!

    Can you explain how this swing differs from your MCS model? I’m not as expert in just watching the swing and seeing the difference.

      The basic difference is in the pivot action, Uncle JJ – with MCS, it’s the Ben Hogan “floating pivot” that provides the shoulder turn with a stable head using the hip & leg action with the right-biased spine tilt.

      The way Dunaway swung has a shift into the right leg (Mike Austin called the hip & leg action “ringing the bell”) from a less biased setup and, while there is some head shift, it is possible to reduce it somewhat, as Dunaway had different swings at times, some with a pretty noticeable shift, and sometimes with just the slight shift – this is the one I’m working to recreate.

      It involves a very pronounced tilting of the hips and shoulders on the pivots, both back and through.

      The MCS is meant to be an optimal “playing golf” swing as most people have better success swinging with a stable head rather than having it shift during the back pivot. The advantage offsets the less-than-absolute-limit of leverage you get with the Dunaway model.

      My issue has never been power, rather accuracy and consistency, which is why I developed the MCS model to have a stable head.

      However, I’ll be 50 next year and as my power declines with age, I’d love to see how far I can still drive the ball with any swing, and for that, I’d want Dunaway’s action and leverage.

      Can you play with Dunaway’s model? I’m sure you can, but does anyone the absolute limit of leverage for most shots when they can just go up a club? Why a 230 yard 7 iron when you can pull the 6i or 5i?

      And I’ll get to see how well I can hit the irons with this swing, but I’m primarily interested in the driver and how much speed and distance I can get out of it.
