So I Said I Was Going To Shorten My Back Swing…

And now I’m there, with the setup adjustment from last week and now the “One Major Move” from the MCS Golf Swing model.

I got video from today’s session, and you will hardly recognize this swing, because I’ve actually made a change to my top position to further shallow out my plane.

To Whit:

Yes, that is actually my top position from today!

Today was a feel day, getting used to the flatter left arm going to the top, so the motion will improve as I become accustomed to that and start to use more leg and hip in the pivot.

This is my transitioning from a long back swing to a “Big Legs, Little Arms” pivot action, because having completed my swing research, I’m now perfecting my own action this year.

This is to show you, friends – when you get your setup right, you can literally transform your swing overnight:

Needless to say, I was hitting draws today with this action, but you can easily fade the ball by following the 2-1 shaping principles I’ve talked about before.

I have Driver, 8 iron and 5 iron swings to show, but I only had time to make some Driver gifs to show you all the different look in the swing.

I still can’t believe how much shorter that back swing is compared to my usual past-parallel, but I wasn’t doing anything to shorten it consciously – the flatter plane going back took care of that.

I thought of this yesterday while swinging my SwingRite – my usual previous action had a steeper aspect to it than what I would have been doing with my SwingRite or the Kettle Bell “One Exercise.”

At a certain point, it is all mental, and when you can overcome the mental barriers to changing your swing (usually, that it feels so strange when you make a change), you can swing any way you wish, as I proved today first time out swinging this way.

I might actually be longer with my irons now than I was, but I’ll have to get some metrics before I know – today was just a move-groove session, but I was crushing my 8  and 5 irons.

    Looks great DJ!! I think your wrist positions are in a much better place which really compliments the little arms philosophy. No need to do any rerouting just drop and pop.

      It’s one of those things that I know in theory according to the MCS GS model but that I have stubbornly not changed because I just like the feel of that top position with the longer back swing.

      You’re correct about the re-routing aspect – always a risk of short-circuiting that with the high and steep arm position, where you see now that the club is in the slot a lot earlier on the down swing from before (frame 2), and look at the shaft angle in that 3rd frame:

      As I said, I just preferred the feel of the previous move – but I’ve never been the “do as I say, not as I do” type of person (other than when it comes to adjusting to account for physical differences/limitations), so I figured I should grit my teeth and make the change.

      Step 1 went well, now to re-integrate the full hip & leg component! 😀
