Lefty MCS Swinger (Great Action)

I spent some time this weekend with a Wax Golf’er who visited me from Quebec province.

Charles is a physiotherapist and a 4 handicap who has been following my MCS swing research all the way back to when I was posting swing videos (when he mentioned seeing me swinging while wearing a bucket hat, I was floored, because I haven’t worn one since ’09 or ’10).

He was a dedicated Mike Austin follower back in the day, and even spent some time with John Marshall down South some years back, so it was like old times, even though it was our first meeting.

With such a low handicap, he of course came with a pretty solid swing established, but had pulling and hooking issues, so we got to work on things.

I again took him through the setup process that I will be showing in the “E = MCS” video and, like Nick earlier in the week, he loved it, being a right-handed swinger going lefty – and you’ll see thousands of his type in hockey country, I might add, after all I’m a lefty who swings rightie!

I haven’t edited the video I got today but he had his own camera going yesterday and recorded something cool that I noticed which really helped his swing.

He had a very quick tempo even as he began hitting beautiful iron shots, and this was deeper into the session when he finally got to the driver.

I had given him the SwingRite stick to try out, and he surprised me by clicking it pretty easily on a setting I thought he’d take a couple of tries to click.

I kept lowering it until it took him a couple of tries, and then I noticed something – he had a very nice and much slower tempo with the SwingRite than with his swing, because you really have to “gather” that back swing pivot to get a click on the harder settings.

So I had a lightbulb go off when he was still quick with the driver – I told him, “Why don’t you swing the clicker until you get a click, then pick up the driver and hit that, let’s see what happens?”

This isn’t a set-up, this happened in real time:

As you can tell by Charles’ and my reactions, he creamed a beautiful drive with a baby draw (his regular shot shape), and it was high and penetrating.

That was yesterday, and the only thing I noticed that I would have had any complaint with, of course, is the leading foot through what is otherwise an awesome impact:

Today, before he headed home, we worked some more and I explained to him that it’s nothing more than the left or trailing foot being anchored, combined with his very fast hip action.

So, he’ll need to do some drilling with a leading arm ball toss (also in the upcoming video) and some swings with the trailing foot exaggerated to slide to the leading foot on the follow.

I was very impressed with his club speed and control with such a short back swing, and he picked up even more with the adjusted address position (which you see him going through the setup procedure with the driver in the clip) and the slower tempo.

He was tickled with his ball-striking, I’d say, from the 20 minute mark yesterday, and I am very gratified that he credits me with having helped him build his swing by following my blogging and watching the MCS videos over the years.

I will be making a trip to the Montreal area sooner or later, so I’m sure it won’t be too long before I get to see his swing in action on the course.

Until then, I’ll be monitoring his progression with the swing changes we implemented, but he’s on his way!

Very impressive, Charles! DJ is to be credited indeed for crafting this swing model and furthermore explaining it so well. I’m looking forward to the new video DJ!

It’s even more impressive seeing it in person, Van. The sound and flight of his strikes… very nice.

And the video is looking to be even better than I had hoped, as I am finding all of the people with whom I work are taking to the simplified concepts very quickly!

Great update I just got from Charles on his upgraded swing action:

Only took 1 swing to warm up this morning, puring every shot straight and far. Amazing my friend!

And that, my friends, is the MCS swing. Plug and play!
