JFK, Best Prez Golfer? MCS Swinger

?????????????????Originally published Nov 15, 2013

I had to re-post this after taking another look at JFK’s action… that is one good swing for a guy with or without a bad back!

/update

Yes, the best golfer ever to live in the White House of the United States of America used what you would call an MCS swing.

What is MCS?

Of course, it means MechanicallyCorrect Swing.  And when you take a look at JFK’s action, you’ll see a lot of Austin/MCS in the lower body action and overall swing motion.  I would actually think that JFK had taken lessons from a Mike Austin or Ben Hogan back in the day…

I found the gif. in a GolfDigest online article by Luke Kerr-Dineen called “Footage of JFK’s golf swing shows how the best golfing president compensated for back pain”

What does JFK do, or rather what did he do, that is not only not done today in the modern conventional golf swing, but is discouraged?

Look at his lower body action.  Watch the right leg straighten as the left leg flexes inward.

blog-jfk-dl-480Look at his down swing, and the leading-foot stomp combined with the leading side leverage coming into impact (hey, that sounds a lot like DJ’s MCS!).

Here’s the New MCS swing with a driver, showing basically the same mechanical action in a healthy, able-boded man in his mid-40s who can drive a ball well over 300 yards with this swing action…

The big differences are my wider stance (I don’t have back problems, so I can use a regular-width stance) and longer back swing (again, I don’t have back problems, so my swing is twice as long as JFK’s).  But the same principles are at work here…

The legs and hips are the engine that drive and power the golf swing.  Mobile legs and hips (“loose”) give you speed and power.

Look at the two gifs. above for a minute.  What more do you need in a swing, which is a motion to strike a ball and send it in a direction you desire?

JFK’s swing – what more do you have to do in a swing, other than what he’s doing?  This is as simple as it gets…

A couple of pertinent excerpts from the article, which I will highlight and bold myself:

According to Guss, a number of key moves here — the short backswing, the loose lower body, the large amount of turn with both his upper and lower body — are again all the product of JFK’s back problems.

Kennedy turning his upper and lower body turns quickly and early, for example, helps him avoid any pain by reducing body torque, as does his short backswing — something not commonly associated with such a large turn.
If you were to put him in a modern backswing position…creating torque by twisting the lower body against the upper body, I think he’d be in a lot of pain,” Guss said. “His backswing would probably also get so short that he wouldn’t be able to hit the ball anywhere.”

This, folks, is a man who could barely get out of bed at times with his back problems, and yet played to a 1 Handicap.

So, How did he do it?

The answer is painfully obvious and might embarrass many golf swing trainer/analysts, because Guss, in the quote just gave it away:

He did it with a swing that did not put additional pain and suffering on an already agonizing part of his body, that being his back

So, if a man swung that way to save his back, and the young guys half his age today are falling to the left and right with back problems…

What do you think is the right way to swing, healthy or hurt?

Since you are the best golf video maker, I think it would be very interesting if we had one of you up-the-line, like JFK.

    Excellent point!

Would there as well be another group to add to the JFK conspiracy theories. The PGA suppressed Austin and his teaching method and now we have JFK swinging Austinesque. No, they wouldn’t have. No, they wouldn’t. I certainly hope so. Yah never know.

And the swing of the current President of the United States of America, Barack Obama

And the Speaker of the House, John Boehner’s golf swing, the principal adversary of Barack Obama.

amazing how awful Barry’s swing is and how he doesn’t at least bother to take some basic instruction after all this time. Scary to think about the implications, I mean if I swung like that I wouldn’t want anyone watching me even in a shower.
