This will be old hat for anyone who’s been reading my blogging for any length of time, but I’m building up a library of quick swing advice clips for the Wax Golf Channel so apologies if this is something that bores you.
There are of course lots of swingers in golf who swing with both feet planted on the ground during their back swing, but they are either people who 1) Have the flexibility to do so and 2) Don’t swing harder than they should from that kind of position or 3) they are doing it now and will pay later.
So I would never say to someone “You can’t swing with both feet flat on the ground during the back swing,” because some people not only do it, they seem to suffer no ill effects, and that’s usually because they have enough flexibility in their bodies to create a decent hip turn and shoulder turn without having to lift their leading heel.
For those of us who aren’t made of rubber, the planted-heel swing can be very difficult to perform properly and worse, a lot of back issues arise from insisting on swinging like that.

I say, do it if you can and you aren’t hurting yourself. The only problem is that by the time you figure out it’s bad for your back, the damage may have already been done.
