The Leading Heel Lift

?????????????This will be old hat for anyone who’s been reading my blogging for any length of time, but I’m building up a library of quick swing advice clips for the Wax Golf Channel so apologies if this is something that bores you.

There are of course lots of swingers in golf who swing with both feet planted on the ground during their back swing, but they are either people who 1) Have the flexibility to do so and 2) Don’t swing harder than they should from that kind of position or 3) they are doing it now and will pay later.

So I would never say to someone “You can’t swing with both feet flat on the ground during the back swing,” because some people not only do it, they seem to suffer no ill effects, and that’s usually because they have enough flexibility in their bodies to create a decent hip turn and shoulder turn without having to lift their leading heel.

For those of us who aren’t made of rubber, the planted-heel swing can be very difficult to perform properly and worse, a lot of back issues arise from insisting on swinging like that.

I say, do it if you can and you aren’t hurting yourself.  The only problem is that by the time you figure out it’s bad for your back, the damage may have already been done.

    Hogan agreed with you mate:
“The body and the legs move the feet. LET THEM MOVE THE FEET. As regards the left heel, how much the left knee breaks in on the backswing determines how much the heel comes up. I never worry about the left heel. Whether it comes off the ground a half inch or a quarter of an inch or remains on the ground as a result of my body and leg action on the backswing – this is of no importance at all. I pay no attention to it”

Just noticed in his Power Golf book – “Visualize your neck as the hub of a wheel with your arms and shoulders rotating around this hub”, published in 1948 I believe, very MCS/MPS don’t ya think?

Two pretty money quotes from Hogan there, Seb! Why doesn’t anyone talk about the C7 anymore but obsesses about other things Hogan? I could say the same for what he says about the lifting heel – I don’t get it…

If a nice girl in a short golf skirt does not have a good floating left heel, I tend to lose interest fast. The more leg the better.
